Working in the healthcare system here in US has always left me wondering about my people back in Kenya, where availability and accessibility of services is very minimal.
Last year in November 2009, I partnered with KIOMM foundation in organizing a medical camp in Limuru, Kenya. The organization included recruiting a team of medical professionals, social workers and clerical staff from community health centers, university of Nairobi medical school and other community organizations. Kiomm Foundation funded the medical camp and also with the help of Medshare, donated the screening supplies for diabetes and hypertension, while the Kenyan government donated the pharmaceutical supplies.
It was such a busy day, with hundreds of individuals flowing to the medical camp to receive services. Consultations were made, and treatments offered depending on the conditions. Individuals also received health education on lifestyle behavior changes in managing some of the conditions especially type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardio vascular diseases. It was such a blessings offering such services, while individuals came in with desperation all over the faces, they left with hope, most of them could not thank the foundation enough for offering the health services. They hoped this could happen often.
I want to thank Kiomm foundation for such a great work and giving me the opportunity to touch other people’s lives. Each person has a talent, discover the joy of giving by volunteering or giving to such a foundation that is changing lives.
